ULEZ Scrappage Scheme Ending on 8th September
Sadiq Khan has decided to end the ULEZ Scrappage Scheme to new applications on the 8th of September. This scheme allowed those with non-compliant cars under his expanded ULEZ to claim £2,000 to help them purchase a new vehicle.
If you are eligible and haven't claimed yet, we strongly urge you to act quickly, as there are only two weeks left. For more details and to see if you qualify, please visit TfL's Scrappage Schemes page.
While we have always been, and remain, opposed to Sadiq Khan’s unfair ULEZ expansion, and while the Scrappage Scheme was initially too restrictive, we were pleased to see our pressure eventually force the Mayor to open the scheme to all Londoners – even if this was a case of ‘too little, too late’.
However, with the scheme’s closure, there’s a real risk that more Londoners will be trapped with essential non-compliant vehicles, unable to save for a new one because of the £12.50 daily charge.
It’s also deeply concerning that the Mayor has ignored the plight of low-income Londoners who still owe money on vehicles which were purchased through finance. The scrappage scheme often doesn’t cover their outstanding debts, leaving them in negative equity and continuing to pay the daily charge. We have raised this issue repeatedly, yet no solution has been provided.
Fighting for Fairer Tolling on the Blackwall Tunnel
Another critical issue we're addressing is the Mayor’s proposal to charge up to £4 per crossing on the new Silvertown Tunnel, as well as the Blackwall Tunnel, which is currently free to use. This toll is intended to pay off the £2.2 billion construction debt, but the City Hall Conservatives feel the current plans would unfairly impact residents of the eastern boroughs which border the Thames. Some of these residents rely on the tunnel for their daily commutes and may end up with a sudden charge of nearly £3,000 a year, when they could previously cross for free.
Unlike the Labour Mayor, we believe that residents of the eastern Boroughs which border the Thames shouldn’t have to pay the fare every single time they cross. You can respond to the Mayor’s consultation by visiting haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk before it closes on 3rd September.
